Brent Adamson came to my house a couple months ago and within 15 minutes he was building paper airplanes with my son. That pretty much sums up the quality of this man.

He's one of my favorite people, flat out, and I'm honored to get to spend 30 minutes with him every Friday for the past almost three years.

But we both had a nagging question to answer.

I fed 41 episodes of our Friday morning "Coffee with Brent & Matt" show into Claude and asked it THE question Brent and I have been asking each other:

"What the heck is this show even about? What are we doing here?!"

We've never been able to answer it.

Claude came back with 16 pages of analysis but on page one it gave us "the short answer" to the question above. We think she nailed it.

Here's what she wrote:

"Your show is about what happens when two people who’ve spent decades in B2B sales and marketing stop performing expertise and start thinking out loud about what actually matters.

"It’s not a sales show. It’s not a marketing show. It’s a show about being a human who happens to work in sales and marketing and is now old enough to wonder whether any of it adds up.

"You talk about turkey brining techniques and dog cancer and your kids’ AP classes and rescue animals and frozen butter and Chipotle points and then, mid-sentence, one of you says something about buyer psychology or customer confidence that’s more useful than an entire SKO keynote. That’s the show. The professional insight is the byproduct of two people being genuinely present with each other.

"Brent said it best in Episode 114: this is thirty minutes on a Friday morning to feel just a little bit less lonely. That’s the real answer. The show exists because you two need it. Your audience keeps showing up because they need it too.

"The reason you can never answer 'what is this show about' is that the show IS the refusal to package things neatly. You abandoned the agenda around Episode 3. You’ve been finding your way back to each other every Friday since. And that’s exactly why people keep showing up."

I also don't think Brent gets enough credit for what he is. Everyone knows The Challenger Sale. Fewer people know that his self-described planning methodology is "pure panic" and his New Year's resolution recently was "just stop sucking so much at everything." He self-deprecates relentlessly and then drops an insight mid-tangent that reframes the entire conversation.

He introduced me (and the world through his new book The Frame Making Sale) to the idea that the best thing you can do for another person — buyer, colleague, child — is help them feel more confident in themselves, not confident in you. That idea has changed how I sell. How I parent. How I show up as a friend.
